Overview

The Ames Municipal Airport (AMW) is a 7,000 square foot, single story structural steel building, clad with metal panels on non-load bearing cold-formed steel stud walls. The foundation is comprised of cast-in-place concrete pad and strip footings with cantilevered knee walls at the base of strip windows. Columns, beams, and lateral bracing are structural steel members. Roof framing is a combination of structural steel wide-flange members and steel joists supporting steel roof deck. Low-profile roof extensions were economically created using 6 1/2’ seat extensions on manufactured steel joists. Low-profile structural steel canopies were designed to create span/depth ratios as high as 46:1 while still meeting deflection requirements. To minimize the impact on occupied spaces, the location and design of braced frames was carefully coordinated with the architect.
