Overview

Burns & McDonnell was the engineer of record for this aircraft hangar on the island of Oahu. Meyer Borgman Johnson was commissioned by the steel fabricator to provide building information modeling and integrated project design (IPD) services for . Working collaboratively with the steel detailer, MBJ built a virtual structural steel model using Tekla software and provided quality control by checking the model for completeness and accuracy throughout the design process. Face-to-face meetings with the engineer of record to review the model replaced the need to submit standard shop drawings, which decreased the time to get approved shop drawings and reduced the number of errors and field work orders. The use of IPD reduced project engineer resource strain on the steel fabricator and contractor by using a 3D model with steel detailing, shop drawing, and RFI management and coordination of structural detailing coordinated with the joist manufacturer.
