THE PROJECT

Project Highlights
  • New 230,000 SF federal courthouse safely serves the public and enhances the community
  • Performance-based engineering addressed various explosive device and hostile vehicle attack threat scenarios
  • Sustainability features included a highly reflective cool roof, insulated window glazing, LED lighting, occupancy sensors, and daylight harvesting

Des Moines U.S Courthouse, situated on a two-acre parcel on the west bank of the Des Moines River, is a six-story federal courthouse that will replace the existing 93-old building. Designed to accommodate the expanding needs of the courthouse and necessary security measures, the 230,000-square-foot facility will house nine courtrooms and offices for criminal court, bankruptcies, probation, appeals and the United States Marshals Services. The courthouse includes a number of notable of sustainable elements including a highly reflective cool roof, insulated window glazing, LED lighting, occupancy sensors, and daylight harvesting. These and other intentional aspects of design pave the way for GSA to pursue LEED Gold certification.

OUR SOLUTIONS

IntegralRSG staff (while at a previous firm) led specialty engineering and consulting efforts to address design compliance with Interagency Security Committee standards for a Facility Security Level IV designation. The completed technical work focused heavily around performance-based engineering to address various improvised explosive device and hostile vehicle attack threat scenarios as well as structural resilience requirements centered around disproportionate collapse resistance. Leveraging an integrated design approach, holistic and unobtrusive risk management solutions were evolved to best minimize programmatic, functional, and aesthetic impacts.

The MBJ-IntegralRSG team was later engaged to lead Construction Administration services related to performance-specified blast hardening of building enclosure systems. MBJ was instrumental in efforts to troubleshoot installation difficulties and quality issues related to blast-resistant curtain wall systems to preserve alignment with ISC standard expectations, working closely with the GSA, Neumann Monson, and Ryan Companies. The effort included close coordination with the window manufacturer/installer to complete independent technical and risk assessments of affected assemblies to streamline approval of delegated design engineering calculations.
