THE PROJECT

Project Highlights
  • Wood clad structure
  • Multiple structural systems including concrete, masonry, and steel
  • Retaining wall

Goose Creek Safety Rest Area, located in the woods on the embankment of Goose Creek, is a highway rest area designed to encourage travelers to slow down, rest, and rejuvenate. The safety rest building, storage building, and rehabilitated picnic pavilions replace aging structures from the 1960s. Built on the original footprint, the unique circular-design rest stop features wood-slat cladding, a glass-walled lobby, and an elevated walkway. Sustainable design elements are featured inside and out. The new building was designed using passive solar strategies for day-lighting and thermal comfort and uses a building management system for energy management and LED lighting to reduce energy use. Outside, large pollinator gardens and plantings protect existing trees, wildlife and the adjacent creek.

OUR SOLUTIONS

The main rest stop building is clad in wood and encircled by an elevated walkway that overlooks the creek. A new retaining wall supports the embankment leading up to the main building. As a result of early and significant studies at the beginning of the project, MBJ selected a combination of concrete, masonry, and weathering steel for all structures on the site. The materials uniquely suit the functioning of the building, elevated walkway and canopy structures, as well as reinforce the design, and provide durability and low maintenance for years to come.
