THE PROJECT

Project Highlights
  • Largest improvements project of a $205,000,000 bond referendum
  • Notable additions include a 30,000 SF performing arts center and a 24,000 SF aquatics center

Brainerd High School Addition and Renovation is a multi-phase project designed to meet the needs of students, staff, and the community for generations to come. The largest improvements project of a $205,000,000 bond referendum approved in April 2018, the project brings grades 9-12 all under one roof in the existing 1968 North Campus building. The addition includes 143,000 square feet of new construction on three levels to match corresponding floors of the existing high school. The new construction features a 30,000-square-foot performing arts center, two gymnasiums, and a 24,000-square-foot aquatics pool addition on the lower level. With the addition of the eight-lane competitive swimming pool, the school is now able to host a variety of event and community groups. The renovation also includes a conversion of the 1964 South Campus building into alternative and transitional educational spaces.

OUR SOLUTIONS

Careful planning and phasing by MBJ and the project team minimized disruptions to students and staff during the school year. Renovations updated classrooms, commons, locker rooms, kitchen, and support spaces totaling 136,000 square feet. Existing structural systems include precast concrete double tee floors and roofs, precast concrete beams and columns, cast-in-place concrete structural slabs, beams and columns, and steel joist roofs supported on structural steel beams and columns.

The new construction consists primarily of structural steel and steel joists, with a number of precast concrete wall panels. The full-size auxiliary gym is supported on structure (8″ slab on metal deck w/ W27 and W18 @ 9′ OC supported on bearing walls) with a wrestling gym below. A precast stadia audience area surrounds the new diving well and eight-lane lap pool. PC wall panels support long-span joists at the roof of both major athletic additions. The old pool was infilled and repurposed as a multi-purpose room.
