THE PROJECT

Project Highlights
  • Connection design for new $275 million performing arts center
  • Tight site constraints, entire building supported by 7 super columns, which align with parking structure below
  • Design-assist connection design, collaborative approach with EOR
  • Design for significant blast loads

Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center, located at the World Trade Center near the 9/11 Memorial in New York City, will become a centerpiece for the arts community. Resembling an illuminated cube, the center offers 90,000 square feet of world-class dance, music, theater, film, opera, and community space on three levels. Fittingly named, the Play level (top), the Performer level (middle), and the Public level (bottom), the Play level includes multiple performance spaces that hold 499-, 250-, and 99-seats and the Public level includes restaurant/bar space. The unique “building within a building” structure created unique challenges for acoustic separation.

OUR SOLUTIONS

MBJ provided steel connection design services for this award-winning performing arts center. The cubic steel framed structure utilizes 3,800 tons of steel. The entire project team met multiple project challenges including tight site constraints and connecting to below-grade transportation and utility infrastructure. The project required coordination of challenging geometry and supporting the entire building on just seven super columns. MBJ also played a vital role in the design-assist phase prior to complete EOR documents, including weekly coordination meetings with GC, EOR, fabricator and erector, providing insightful concept details for team input, and working through complicated and high load connections for the overall best solution.
