THE PROJECT

Project Highlights
  • Connection design for new stadium (one of two firms under the EOR)
  • Award-winning, hosted 2019 Super Bowl
  • Eight-panel translucent retractable roof

Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the new home to National Football League’s Atlanta Falcons and Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United, features an iconic eight-panel translucent retractable roof, setting a new bar for the structure of long span roofs. When closed, each individual roof panel overlaps the next like a pinwheel camera shutter. When opened all together, the panels extend outwards in a gesture of bird wings surrounding an oval-shaped opening that spans 14.5 acres. The multi-purpose stadium contains seating for up to 72,000 fans, including 180 luxury suites as well as other VIP seating. Two of the facility’s most compelling features are translucent glass walls that open along with the roof to allow in fresh air and a five-story halo board that encloses the playing area.

OUR SOLUTIONS

Working with engineer of record Buro Happold, MBJ provided steel connection design for the roof panels, the cantilevered ends of the main roof trusses, and the hood framing between these cantilevered ends. Leveraging the Tekla member model, our experienced team of connection engineers collaborated seamlessly with the EOR to create connection solutions to extremely complicated geometry and load conditions. MBJ’s timely and comprehensive solutions were instrumental in keeping the project on schedule.
