THE PROJECT

Project Highlights
  • Transit-oriented development near light rail system
  • 370 ft and 220 ft tall post-tensioned concrete building
  • Over 1,100,000 square feet of mixed-use apartment/hotel/office/retail space
  • Public-private partnership with the city of Phoenix

Central Station, situated adjacent to Arizona State University’s downtown Phoenix campus and Civic Space Park, is a dynamic 1,100,000-square-foot, mixed-use development designed to merge seamlessly with the existing transit station. Revitalizing the bus and light rail system into a vibrant urban hub, Central Station addresses both the transit and housing needs of the city. The pedestrian-oriented development consists of two residential towers – a 370 ft tall apartment tower and a 220 ft tall student housing tower, flexible creative office space, retail, and two levels of below grade parking.

OUR SOLUTIONS

The East tower is a 33-story, post-tensioned concrete structure with 362 residential units, totaling 278,000 square feet of rentable living space. Amenities include a fitness center, demonstration kitchen, dining lounge, game room and other support spaces. Two floors of the building are configured for commercial office space and 30,000 square feet for retail at the ground level. Providing much needed student housing downtown for ASU, the West tower is a 22-story student housing tower with 655 beds. The building’s multiple levels allow for a spacious amenities deck at the 22nd level and balconies that overlook the city.

Floor plates on both towers consist of post-tensioned flat slabs and reinforced concrete shearwall lateral systems. MBJ held the amount of rebar and concrete which saved the owner from significant cost increases from DD to CD drawings.
