THE PROJECT

Project Highlights
  • 12,500 gallon therapy pool at the second level
  • Vibration control
  • Composite steel structure

TRIA Orthopedic Center, the region’s first dedicated orthopedic urgent care center, offers world class comprehensive orthopedic care and sports medicine. The three-story, 95,000-square-foot medical office building is designed for same day injury treatment, orthopedic surgery, and physical therapy. The structure consists of composite steel with a stone-clad precast and curtainwall cladding system. Features include a 12,500 gallon therapy pool suspended from the second level structure, four operating rooms designed to meet strict vibration criteria at the third level, exam rooms, and an exercise gym. The ground-to-roof, light-filled atrium visually establishes TRIA as an anchor tenant of the 96-acre CityPlace development.

OUR SOLUTIONS

MBJ led the design and construction team and delivered the project using a lean methodology of integrated steel services. We achieved this by developing both the structural design model in Revit to level of development (LOD) 350 and the steel construction model in Tekla Structures. Initial Tekla modeling was provided to fabricator bidders prior to their selection to assist their understanding of the project.

Once the fabricator was selected, MBJ carried the Tekla model forward to into a full LOD 500 fabrication model that included all connected elements, also designed by our team. The result of the integration between structural design and steel detailing resulted in a six-week time savings from the original procurement schedule along with a successful steel fabrication and erection outcome. MBJ worked closely together with the architect and general contractor to make appropriate early decisions, enhancing the role of each part of the team and ability to communicate, which contributed to the overall project success.
