THE PROJECT

Project Highlights
  • New centralized location improves communication and coordination of four justice courts
  • Innovative exterior brick façade
  • Entry canopy structure
  • Monumental steel framed floating stair

Maricopa County Southeast Justice Center brings together four justice courts into a single two-story, 109,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility, enhancing the quality and efficiency of services while reducing the costs associated with multiple leases. This consolidated design fosters improved communication and coordination among judges and staff, while also providing expanded space for operations, administrative support, and adult probation space. Strategically located north of the Superior Court, the center serves as home to the North Mesa, East Mesa, West Mesa, and Highland Precincts, which were previously scattered miles apart. The facility houses the Adult Probation Department, Superior Court Representatives, and Judicial Branch Security Representatives, creating a centralized hub for streamlined judicial and probationary operations.

OUR SOLUTIONS

The structure features a dynamic façade with custom-engineered brick patterns, a soaring 28’ tall atrium entrance, exposed composite concrete floor system, and a monumental steel framed floating stair, all requiring strategic engineering solutions.

The two-story façade of the Justice Center and Adult Probation facility is a standout feature, showcasing distinctive reinforced brick systems that create a visually compelling aesthetic. MBJ developed unique patterns using 8″ x 4″ x 16″ and 4″ x 4″ x 8″ bricks to achieve a complex and cohesive design. The non-bearing brick walls were carefully designed to support their own weight and withstand exterior wind loading. For the parapet, which extends 6′-8″ above the roof structure, a porous brick pattern continues uninterrupted to the top without a bond beam, enhancing the visual openness. To achieve the unique façade design, MBJ engineered the exterior brick into 20″ wide vertical wall segments, integrated with horizontal joint reinforcement. In areas with porous, projected, and non-projected patterns, “zig-zag” masonry control joints accommodate necessary breaks, while seamlessly blending into the overall aesthetic.

At the structure’s corners, vertical chimney elements open at the ground level and are supported by reinforced brick lintels that span the corner junctions, integrating with the adjoining walls. Within the interior lobby, the porous brick walls are suspended from above, concealing the support structure to preserve the clean architectural intent. Through innovative techniques, including internal steel hangers, MBJ overcame structural complexities in the project to deliver a bold and innovative solution aligned with the architect’s vision.
