Kraus-Anderson Headquarters, a five-story, 100,000-square-foot office building, consolidates the company’s three Twin Cities business operations into one central downtown location. Accommodating 300 employees, Kraus-Anderson’s goal was to create a collaborative work environment featuring an open office format, gathering spaces, and numerous amenities including a fitness center, training area, patio and cafeteria. The anchor building of the full city block development, other properties include HQ Apartments, a 17-story residential building; eight-story Elliot Park Hotel, Autograph Collection by Marriott; Finnegan’s House/FINNovation Lab, a craft brewery/taproom and small-business incubator; and an underground parking structure for 500+ vehicles. MBJ is the Structural Engineer of Record for the entire multi-phased development.

OUR SOLUTIONS

The corporate headquarters building is comprised of structural steel framing sitting atop the post-tensioned concrete parking below. Unique features include a custom steel staircase connecting levels three and four and a rooftop deck on level five shaded by an aluminum trellis with a view of the downtown Minneapolis skyline. MBJ coordinated large web penetrations for HVAC ductwork to meet story clear heights that maximize daylight and preserve valuable headroom in the open workspace. 40’ bays were used to align with the parking grid below resulting in lengthy architectural precast concrete panels and the need to pay particular attention to the structures vibration performance. Green concrete mixtures using fly ash, slag, and other green materials specified by MBJ, plus energy efficient windows and HVAC systems, contributed to the building’s LEED Silver certification. KA took sustainability one step further providing a home for honey bees on the rooftop.
